Jaroslav, *23. září 1901, čes. básník a novinář. Vstoupil do literatury jako člen skupiny Devětsil, jejíž bás. program ztělesňoval prvními třemi knihami. V Městě v slzách (1922) se vyznával ze svého revol. přesvědčení. Ale již zde jeho básně nebojovaly stroze a přísně, nýbrž spíše tesknily nad krutostí světa. [Seifert]-ova nyvá snivost obetkává tu život křehkou něhou, předělává svět k obrazu jeho snů a konstruuje obrazy budoucího vytouženého světa. V knize Samá láska (1923) vstupuje do jeho poesie konkretní, dnešní proletář se všemi svými pozemskými radostmi a hmotným snem. Jeho poesie je tu co do básnických prostředků ještě křiklavěji „nekulturní”, ale sílí také naivní básnivost primitivova. Ponenáhlu se jeho básně rozšiřují časově i místně. Těžisko [Seifert]-ových veršů se přesunuje vždy důrazněji z oblasti myšlenkové, citové a volní do oblasti fantasie. Proletářský primitivismus a eklekticismus je vystřídán v knize Na 
vlnách T. S. F. 1924 (znovu r. 1938 s názvem Svatební cesta), metodickým úsilím tvárným. [Seifert]-ovi se dostalo poznání prudkého životního tempa, kterým se prostory země zhušťují ve vědomí v jediný celek. Z jeho poesie, která je v této knize autentickou představitelkou českého * poetismu, zmizel i logický celek vět a zůstal jen volný proud představ, kterým člověk sní; v oparu poesie zmizela však i vůle a etika. Sociální neklid doby zůstal však i nadále středem, kolem něhož kroužila [Seifert]-ova básnická inteligence. To se projevilo v další knize Slavík zpívá špatně (1926), v níž od změkčilosti moderního světa se [Seifert] vrací k poesii světa dělného i dělnického. Přispěla k tomu cesta do SSSR, která zanechala v knize četné ohlasy. Přes Moskvu se vrací k poesii dělného dne i doma. Jeho nová soc. poesie je soustředěnější než v prvních dvou knihách. Do knihy zaléhá již také tíha života po poklesu poválečné revoluční vlny a přináší proti ostré empiričnosti knih předešlých silné zduchovění. Tento proces pokračuje dále v knize Poštovní holub (1929), kde se z melancholie rozrostl smutek. Není to už jen dobová tíseň, nýbrž i osobní vnitřní konflikt, z něhož básníkovi hořkne od základu svět. V Jablku z klína (1933) vidíme ho již po krisi resignovaně klidného a hořce moudrého a jeho básně, dříve rozevláté, se tu přiklánějí k pevné uzavřené formě. Jejich lyrická intensita při tom stoupá, aby dosáhla vrcholu v Rukou Venušiných (1936). Tichá resignace někdejšího bouřliváka, uspokojené a melodické nazírání světa se pojí s inspirací, milostnou a důvěrnou vděčností zemi a jejím věčným darům. Po této knize přerušuje [Seifert] svou intensivní lyrickou práci dvěma knihami veršů (Zpíváno do rotačky 1936 a Jaro s bohem 1937), které obsahují náladové reportáže a satiru. Té však chybí pravý základ, z něhož by rostla. Satira básníkova se obrací často proti němu samému, vyznívajíc lehounkou sebeironickou melancholií. Tyto příležitostné verše nejsou ani zdaleka tak soustředěné a vnitřně napjaté jako jeho vysoká poesie. K její niti se [Seifert] vrací zase teprve cyklem elegií na smrt T. G. Masaryka Osm dní (1937). Hledáním čistých pramenů lyriky se začíná jeho zatím poslední kniha Zhasněte světla (1938), do jejíhož plánu zasáhly již tragické národní události z podzimu 1938. Od prosté písňové intonace prvních básní vede jej národní nebezpečí k střídmému vyslovování lásky k rodné zemi, vytrysklé ve chvíli nebezpečí. Se současnou čes. lyrikou se sdílí [Seifert] o tón lásky k míru a odhodlanosti k obraně, lásky k ženě a dítěti a ocelové stráže, bdící nad jejich spánkem. Tu se [Seifert] stává vyslovitelem kolektivních zážitků svého lidu, básníkem nejen sociálním nýbrž i národním. B. Vk.
